Who is JoVia?

JoVia Armstrong is a child of Motown, a Detroit-bred Multi-Percussionist and 2009 Detroit Music Award nominee for Outstanding World Instrumentalist.  In 2012, she is embarking upon supporting the recent release of her electrifying debut album, “Fuzzy Blue Robe Chronicles”.

She has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with artists such as El DeBarge, Martha Reeves, Omar, Joe VasConcellos, RES, Alison Crockett, Angela Johnson, Maysa, Rahsaan Patterson, Eric Robeson, Gordon Chambers, Conya Doss, Althea Rene, Nadir, Wendell Harrison, and BSTC. She  played Cajon (box drum) for the “Tour of the Americas 2004”. The group performed original and traditional songs of Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Argentina. She has also performed with various artists opening shows for such acts as Warren Hill, Kindred the Family Soul, Thomas Mapfumo, Gerald Albright and The Bad Plus. She has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Amp Fiddler, Trey Anastacio and Michael Franti & Spearhead.

 JoVia began her career studying percussion as a high school freshman and continued to pursue and perfect her craft at Michigan State University.  While at Michigan State, she performed and studied orchestral percussion (including 4-mallet marimba/vibraphone).  She has also studied African Cuban percussion and has performed in an array of ensembles spanning African drumming and dance, to Latin Jazz and Korean drumming.

She is currently composing songs for her World Jazz group, Musique Noire, which was nominated three years in a row (2009-2011) for Outstanding Jazz Recording and Outstanding World/Reggae Group at the Detroit Music Awards.  JoVia was also honored to receive an individual nomination for Outstanding World/Reggae Instrumentalist.

These days when she’s not composing, writing or performing,  she can be found instructing tomorrow’s generation of musical aficionados with Chicago’s Digital Youth Network & YouMedia.  She is also a regular lesson contributor for Tom Tom Magazine and features several of her lessons via video on YouTube.
