She has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Amp Fiddler, Trey Anastacio and Michael Franti & Spearhead.

JoVia began her career studying percussion as a high school freshman and continued to pursue and perfect her craft at Michigan State University.  While at Michigan State, she performed and studied orchestral percussion (including 4-mallet marimba/vibraphone).  She has also studied African Cuban percussion and has performed in an array of ensembles spanning African drumming and dance, to Latin Jazz and Korean drumming.

She is currently composing songs for her World Jazz group, Musique Noire, which was nominated three years in a row (2009-2011) for Outstanding Jazz Recording and Outstanding World/Reggae Group at the Detroit Music Awards.  JoVia was also honored to receive an individual nomination for Outstanding World/Reggae Instrumentalist.

These days when she’s not composing, writing or performing,  she can be found instructing tomorrow’s generation of musical aficionados with Chicago’s Digital Youth Network & YouMedia.  She is also a regular lesson contributor for Tom Tom Magazine and features several of her lessons via video on YouTube.
