Since a lot of modern music is so depressingly void of flavor, I’m on this retro hunt. I’m discovering all this groovy music that our parents dug.
I’m finding that the Boomers were indeed stoned and highly creative… some of the album covers are true pieces of art.

So yeah… crate digging for inspirational vinyl is what this post is about.

And is ANYTHING better than to see two Black men wax poetic about music with such laughter and true joy? Nah… I didn’t think so.

A good dude with a good heart, who is also partially responsible for my crew’s addiction to bad sitcoms, but we won’t go there in this post.

The Reel Critic Interviews – Anthony Mackie at Chicago Intl Film Fest

Our favorite film reviewer, Reggie Ponder – The Reel Critic is back from covering the Chicago International Film Festival (CIFF) and I hear he had a blast checking out some of the awesome films featured this year. He also had a couple moments with acclaimed actor, Anthony Mackie, who was being honored by the CIFF and presented with an Artistic Achievement award.

I’ve worked with Wendell B. Harris, Jr since late 2008 – and his story and the story of the critically acclaimed CHAMELEON STREET are points of wisdom for any independent filmmaker or any person who is seeking to forge into the mainstream with an independent lens.

Recently, his film was screened at the Cinema 41 film festival in Austin, Texas (props to the organizers for loving on Wendell and the film like they did).
After the screening, Wendell joined the audience via Skype for a VERY candid interview…

Acclaimed Theater Company Celebrates a New Space and Leadership Team for Season 2011/2012

Chicago – October 2011 Congo Square Theatre Company is pleased to announce their new home for the 2011/2012 season will be Stage 773 (formerly Chicago Theater Building), located in Chicago’s Southport Corridor area. The new production home for the critically-acclaimed and award-winning theater company signals a solid leap forward for the company in 2011.

Along with a new home, the company has unveiled its official leadership team, with Ann Joseph-Douglas as Executive Director and Daniel Bryant as Artistic Director. Both have been successfully managing the company, in interim status, since the departure of founding Artistic Director Derrick Sanders in 2009. This announcement comes on the heels of a successful 2010/2011 season that garnered the company 22 Black Theater Alliance Award nominations for The Nativity and Brothers of the Dust, and a Jeff Award nomination for Brothers of the Dust playwright, Darren Canady.

Ann Joseph-Douglas is one of Congo Square’s founding ensemble members and has key positions in the company as Director of Education, Director of Development, Production Manager, and interim Artistic Director before accepting her new position as Executive Director. Her experience in various roles with the company gives her a unique perspective that complements her passion and drive toward success for the company.
She is excited about the work the new team is creating and about the future of one of Chicago’s leading African American theater companies. Douglas states, “I’m optimistic about continuing to improve Congo Square’s stability. As a founding member of the ensemble, I have been proud to serve the organization for twelve years and can see the progression as a new day for Congo Square to flourish as we foster a new relationship with our audiences.”

Daniel Bryant joined Congo Square in 2006 after working on the soon-to-be opening Broadway presentation, Stickfly, written by Lydia R. Diamond. Bryant jumped in as an Artistic Associate before becoming an ensemble member at Congo Square in 2007. He went on to hold the position of Associate Artistic Director alongside Sanders for two years. In 2009 he assumed the role as interim producing artistic director until the official changing of the guard. “I’ve always been honored to be a part of this important company, known for producing high quality theater,” says Bryant.

“Congo Square’s reputation is reflective of the passion that our ensemble of artists have for the craft,”
continues Bryant. “Whether we’re on stage, producing or directing, we commit to the creative process and challenge each other to grow. Our audiences feel that passion and commitment through the work, and if we’re lucky, the experience changes or challenges their view of themselves and the world around them. I’m excited about contributing to this transformative process and to the growth of Congo Square.”
